Microsoft released Windows Server 2022 a few weeks ago. It did so earlier than expected, which is pretty odd, but it seems that the development of new features was already complete and mature so there was no point to wait a few months more. The last sentence pretty much explains the current status of Windows Server: so few changes, albeit interesting ones, that the product can be released months earlier than planned and without much fanfare.

With a post on Microsoft DevBlog, Redmond giant clarified the situation around .NET Framework, its relationship with .NET Core and it announced that  .NET Framework 4.8 the last version of the .NET Framework  that Microsoft will ship. After the release of .NET Core 3 the next major version will be .NET Core 5 which Microsoft wants to be the version of .NET that developers must be using after .NET Core 3.

Microsoft also confirmed a few interesting details as for example that it will skip .NET Core 4 to avoid confusion so the next major version of .NET (any platform) has been called .NET Core 5 to allow developers using the .NET Framework to be familiar with the new [...]

Microsoft ha annunciato di avere rilasciato Powershell per Linux e di avere reso il tool open-source, aprendolo quindi ai contributi da parte di soggetti esterni all’azienda di Redmond. Con questa mossa Microsoft completa il suo percorso di apertura verso il mondo Linux avendo portato verso il sistema operativo del pinguino molte delle tecnologie di base che fino ad oggi erano esclusivamente disponibili sulla piattaforma Windows Server.

Da qualche tempo PHP ha iniziato a rilasciare anche delle build per Windows a 64bit, probabilmente in previsione del lancio della prima versione 64bit non sperimentale per la versione 7 di PHP. Sono attualmente disponibili le versioni x64 sia di PHP 5.5 che 5.6 oltre che ovviamente dell’ultima nata. Il framework dispone anche della corrispondente versione a 64 bit per la OpCache distribuita con i file compilati per Windows ma la sorpresa è che invece il modulo WinCache che Microsoft ha sviluppato qualche anno fa per migliorare le prestazioni di PHP (e che spesso viene considerato uno dei migliori moduli di accelerazione disponibili) non ha invece distribuzioni a 64bit [...]

Microsoft ha pubblicato ieri la versione beta8 di ASP.NET 5, la prima che può definirsi completa nelle sue funzionalità. ASP.NET 5 promette di essere una vera rivoluzione nell’ambito delle tecnologie di sviluppo grazie al deciso cambio di rotta che Microsoft ha impresso al suo framework Web con questa ultima versione. La struttura stessa di ASP.NET, confermata sin dal lontano 2003, è completamente cambiata con l’intento di portare questa nuova versione ad abbracciare tutte le tecnologie e le metodologie di sviluppo più moderne.
